The Adams Elementary principal said a teachers' lounge window was struck by a bullet during the police shooting in Ballard.
SEATTLE — A Seattle police officer shot a suspect in a domestic violence call in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood on Thursday night. During the exchange of gunfire, the officer was also injured and is expected to be OK.
The Seattle Police Department said the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. near Northwest 62nd Street and 28th Avenue Northwest. Police initially responded to the area when a woman reported someone was following her, said Chief Shon Barnes.
An officer shot the suspect and he was taken to the hospital, Barnes said. A Harborview spokesperson said the suspect is in critical condition as of Friday afternoon. The officer was injured with a graze wound to the leg.
Barnes said the department will release the officer's body-worn camera footage within 72 hours, per department policy. In total, three officers were involved.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation. The King County Independent Force Investigations team is reviewing the incident.
Police issued a shelter-in-place order that was later lifted.
The shooting was near Adams Elementary School Community. In an email to families, Principal Douglas Sohn said a teachers' lounge window was struck by a bullet.
"No one inside the building was injured, and there is no indication that any students, staff, or families were directly involved or harmed," Sohn said.
Due to the police activity, a school multicultural potluck was canceled. School will operate as normal on Friday.
Counseling and support services will be available for students and staff tomorrow, Sohn said.
A mother told KING 5 about 30 people were inside Adams Elementary for a PTSA potluck when this shooting happened on the street outside campus. The parent said her family is rattled.
A QFC worker told KING 5 the 911 caller came into the store and met with police. The worker said she appeared to be physically OK, but was distraught.
