SEATTLE — Seattle police are investigating after one person was shot in Columbia City following an altercation Thursday night.

According to the Seattle Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 6:25 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 3800 block of South Angeline Street.

Arriving officers reportedly discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest outside a residence. Police and firefighters provided emergency care before medics transported him to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

Investigators spoke with witnesses, documented the scene, and gathered available video footage as part of the initial response.

Not long after the incident, a 27-year-old man contacted emergency dispatch and told operators he had been involved in the shooting. Officers located him nearby, took him into custody, and recovered a firearm believed to be connected to the case. He was later interviewed by detectives assigned to the department’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit.

According to police, the injured man had allegedly entered his former girlfriend’s apartment without permission and confronted her current partner, leading to a physical altercation. Police say the 27-year-old fired his weapon during the encounter and claimed he acted in self-defense.

After completing the interview process, detectives released the shooter pending further review. No charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation remains open and active.
